Howdy Folks,

Firstly, I’m rewinding back to the Gallery 5 show in Richmond. Thanks to everybody who came out on a rainy, nasty Wednesday to hang out. It was totally worth going in to work the next morning on 5 hours sleep. We’ll see you lovely citizens of Richmond again Sept 16th at the Camel.

Secondly, we got a last minute show at Warren Wilson College in Swannanoa, NC (outside Asheville) last Saturday. I used to go out that way all the time till I got to high school and my family stopped going on vacations. It is absolutely gorgeous there and I swear the air is fresher than anywhere else I’ve been. Which is good because we played outside, next to a soccer field in a clearing on the edge of a forest at sundown. Beautiful. I can’t express my joy at being able to play music in the great outdoors. Don’t get me wrong I like playing smaller clubs and such, but I miss the sun working indoors. I also miss the stars living in a pseudo city and the stars here were incredible. We also got to make s’mores. It was all the fun of camping without having to sleep on rocks. Not to mention, WWC is a really interesting school. If you don’t know about it I recommend you look it up because I don’t think I can properly explain it in this forum, but if you’re into sustainability be prepared to geek out. Anyways, they have a pretty free spirited and adventurous student body which was exemplified by their fire spinning club. That’s right, during the third band there was a simultaneous performance by the school’s FIRE SPINNING CLUB! ON A MOUNTAIN! The day was so enjoyable I wouldn’t have cared if everybody hated our set. Fortunately, that was not the case and we’re working on getting back there this Spring. Special thanks to Tim for getting us on the bill. Also, thanks to the girls from EcoDorm for making the excellent decision to watch The Princess Bride and letting me borrow that crucial afghan blanket.

Finally, we got a bunch of stuff already booked as you can see from our calendar, but we have a lot of really cool stuff pending so stay tuned for some potentially exciting news. Unless it doesn’t happen. If that is the case just forget I said anything at all.

Hello again everybody,

Lots of news to report on from the past week.

First, we took off for Atlanta on August 12th. We drove half the night through torrential downpours and stopped in a serviceable South Carolina motel that looked just like the one from Vacation. However, they don’t run the A/C in vacant rooms so our room was about 90 degrees when we got in it. It was kind of like camping on shag carpet unless you got a bed. 8 hours later we were back on the road. We made a quick stop at the Original Chick-fil-A Restaurant and then hit Atlanta to devour its vintage boutiques, record stores and its local fare. The show itself was great! The Star Bar has great sound and we got a good response. Everybody was super friendly and had tips on other venues in Atlanta and beyond that we should look into playing. On top of that, Today the Moon, Tomorrow the Sun killed it. We’re really glad we were finally able to play a show with them. Also, they were really nice to us and let us crash at their lovely home and meet their wonderful dogs. (Side note: I’m really impressed with the caliber of the floors we get to sleep on. So far the motel has been the worst place we’ve stayed.)

The next morning we took the long haul to Wilmington, NC. Which is a city, I think, that was separated from Hampton Roads at birth. It’s kind of like if you condensed Portsmouth, Norfolk and VB into one city. First thing we did in town was find some food and coffee so everybody would stop yelling at each other and once we regained our composure and normal blood sugar levels we headed to Satellite Bar & Lounge to scope out the place. We pulled up to find a converted grocery store next to an abandoned housing project and walk inside to find…it’s BEAUTIFUL INSIDE! The place has brand new everything and it smells good. I have never said that about a venue in my life, ever. When bands play they throw open these 3 big doors wooden double doors so it feels like it’s outside. There was probably a couple hundred people there and one really awesome dog (Yes, a dog). Dusty, the owner is a really nice guy. Hats off to him for having a great space and doing his best to support independent music. Also, Unholy Tongues, who set up the show, are cool people and a good band. They’re still finishing up their recording so I’m now anxiously awaiting its release. Special thanks to Jeff from Unholy Tongues and his wife Peggy for proving us with quality conversation and sleeping quarters. We’ve been extremely fortunate to meet as many friendly and hospitable people on the road as we have. We’re all really thankful for that. It makes everything so much more enjoyable.

This is getting kind of long so I’ll cut it here and tell you all about the Richmond show and fall plans in a couple days.

Hope you had a great weekend!

We had another great show at the Taphouse. Churn was great as usual and the Fighting Jamesons were wildly entertaining unless, of course, you don’t enjoy Irish music or beverages of the fermented variety. The following weekend we took a one off to Harrisonburg to play with Manorlady at the Blue Nile. If you haven’t been the Blue Nile is a really cool space and the guy who runs it Finks is a really cool guy. The most interesting part of that trip though definitely happened on the streets. We were approached by a woman literally trying to buy the shirts off our backs because hers was sleeveless and she was trying to visit her daughter in prison. Apparently, they don’t let people in with sleeveless shirts. (Sleeveless shirts are a security risk?!) We were all wearing shirts we liked, so we got her a Long Division shirt so she could see her daughter. Good times. Also, thanks to Ben Cooley and the gang for letting us cookout and crash with them.

If you aren’t familiar with either of these programs they are worth checking out. Late Late rock show is indie rock and b-sides and farpastpost plays anything that could possibly be labeled post rock.

Also, we are playing the Blue Nile in Harrisonburg, VA on Saturday with Manorlady and David Bayard Richard. So if you are in that part of Virginia come hang. If you’re hanging back in Hampton Roads you can go see Over the Ocean at the boot and if you’re in Richmond and know where the Grindhouse is you can see a heavy hitting house show with Kingshead and Vicegrip.

Howdy Folks,

Trust me when I say we’ve been real busy this past month. For instance, both Andrew and I attended the wedding of our friends Drew and Lauren (Hooray!) on July 3rd and then left the reception to go directly to play with Whispering Winds and Gifts from Enola. That’s two nights worth of party in one night! Both the wedding and the show were awesome.

This past weekend we took our second venture out of the area code. First stop was in Richmond at Morgan’s Clay Street residence. He and his roommates/friends graciously allowed us to play in their music room and then serenaded us with a variety of classic rock n roll tunes. It’s not everyday you get to hear a Buddy Holly & the Crickets cover. It was a load of fun and the first of what will be a monthly house show. If you don’t know where this place find out, because they will only get better from here.

The show in Lynchburg on Saturday almost didn’t happen because the power went out on Rivermont Pizza’s block right after we got there. So we spent a few hours wandering Lynchburg, saw a GIANT fountain, made Starship Troopers jokes with an ice cream lady and played mini golf until power was restored. The Late Virginia Summers were fantastic, the people in Lynchburg are extremely nice and appreciative of music, the staff and ownership treat the bands really well and (this is the kicker) they have the best pizza I have ever had. If you ever end up near Lynchburg, do yourself a favor and seek it out.

One last order of business. We are playing at the Taphouse in Norfolk this Saturday July 31st with local stalwarts Churn and the Fighting Jamesons. The last show with Churn ruled, so expect more of the same this weekend.

Cheers,
